Biking Around Manhattan
Posted on July 23, 2010 | 3 CommentsLast Saturday I biked around Manhattan. My goal was to stay as close as possible to the waterfront. In this post I include a slideshow of key geographic markers and a geo-tagged map showing the location of each image. In my next post I'll include a map of the path I followed around the island. -
Kayaking on the Hudson
Posted on July 6, 2010 | No CommentsKayaking on the Hudson River is one of the great free pleasures offered in New York City. The Downtown Boathouse has three kayaking locations along the west side of Manhattan. I managed to take a few photos while enjoying the spectacular views. -
High Bridge Bike Trip
Posted on June 29, 2010 | No CommentsOn Saturday afternoon I took a bike trip up to the High Bridge and High Bridge Tower in Northern Manhattan. High Bridge, part of the Old Croton Aqueduct that brought fresh water to the city starting in the 1840s, is the oldest standing bridge in New York. -
Bike and Boat Tour of Jamaica Bay
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsTwo weeks ago, my girlfriend and I biked around Jamaica Bay, stopping at the Wildlife Refuge and cycling along the Rockaway Beach and Jacob Riis Park Boardwalks. Then we took a three-hour, narrated boat tour of the Bay with the American Littoral Society. -
Brooklyn Navy Yard Bike Tour
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsLast Sunday I went on a fascinating Urban Oyster bike tour led by Adam Schwartz of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which during its heyday was a major US shipbuilding center. Today the site is home to a 300-acre industrial park with more than 200 tenants. -
Biking in Staten Island
Posted on May 18, 2010 | 1 CommentTwo weeks ago, I biked down the West Side of Manhattan and took an early morning ferry to Staten Island. During my trip, I visited Snug Harbor, the Alice Austen House, Historic Richmond Town and other sites. Plus, I biked the South Beach Boardwalk. -
Environmental Tour of South Bronx
Posted on May 18, 2010 | 1 CommentLast month I went on an Environmental Bike Tour of the South Bronx organized by Time's Up and led by Harry Bubbins. As you'll see in my slideshow, the coastline around the South Bronx has no parks and greenways like parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hopefully this will change. -
NYC Bike Maps
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsThe New York City Cycling Map (the 2010 version is now available) is an invaluable resource for navigating the bike lanes of the city. I also make extensive use of Google maps. When I'm biking, I constantly use my iPhone's GPS and mapping functionality.
