  • Two weeks ago, my girlfriend and I biked around Jamaica Bay, stopping at the Wildlife Refuge and cycling along the Rockaway Beach and Jacob Riis Park Boardwalks. Then we took a three-hour, narrated boat tour of the Bay with the American Littoral Society.

  • This past Monday, Memorial Day,  I went on a wonderful walk from Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at 89th Street and Riverside Drive to the Battery. My trip along the Hudson took me through Riverside Park, Hudson River Park, Battery Park City and Battery Park.

  • Last Sunday I went on a fascinating Urban Oyster bike tour led by Adam Schwartz of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which during its heyday was a major US shipbuilding center. Today the site is home to a 300-acre industrial park with more than 200 tenants.

  • Two weeks ago, I biked down the West Side of Manhattan and took an early morning ferry to Staten Island. During my trip, I visited Snug Harbor, the Alice Austen House, Historic Richmond Town and other sites. Plus, I biked the South Beach Boardwalk.

  • Last month I went on an Environmental Bike Tour of the South Bronx organized by Time's Up and led by Harry Bubbins. As you'll see in my slideshow, the coastline around the South Bronx has no parks and greenways like parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hopefully this will change.

  • The New York City Cycling Map (the 2010 version is now available) is an invaluable resource for navigating the bike lanes of the city. I also make extensive use of Google maps. When I'm biking, I constantly use my iPhone's GPS and mapping functionality.
