Last Friday, I went on a bike tour of community gardens in Alphabet City (located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan – view Google Map). I didn’t know there were so many wonderful and unique gardens in this area.
Wendy E. Brawer, a sustainable design expert who lives in the East Village, led the tour of about ten participants. She created the non-profit Green Map System, which publishes the online NYC Green Apple Map that highlights the locations of community gardens, composting sites and other sustainable resources and organizations.
Here is a slide show of pictures I shot with my iPhone during the tour (view geo-tagged map to see where each picture was taken):
I learned about this bike tour through Times-Up, an New York City-based direct-action environmental organization.
